HARASSMENT IN WORK PLACE

                                                                 GRAND SUMMARY

To be honest, I consider myself so lucky that not a victim of workplace harassment. However, my choice of this topic stems from the perspective of a wife who witnessed her husband endure verbal harassment. By exploring this topic through the lens of my husband's experience, my goal is to illuminate the widespread occurrence of workplace harassment and its far-reaching effects on individuals and their families.

I chose a variety of resources including global news, articles, blogs, and videos to have a diverse point of view on the problem.

The first article is “How to Recognize and Report Harassment in the Workplace”

The article is the first page on my ways to learn more about workplace harassment, it focuses on recognizing and reporting various forms of workplace harassment, including verbal, psychological, digital, physical, and sexual harassment. It also provides practical steps for reporting, including addressing the perpetrator, escalating to management or HR, and contacting external agencies if internal channels fail. Legal protections under workplace harassment laws are highlighted, emphasizing the importance of businesses complying with these laws.

The next one is the video “Witnesses to Harassing Activity at Work”

In the video, Dr. Julia Shaw tells her story in the part and discusses about witnessing harassment. Despite assumptions that individuals would intervene, many refrain due to fear of consequences, lack of knowledge on reporting, and the stigma attached to being labeled a 'snitch.' Practical ways for organizations to foster a healthier workplace, such as anonymous reporting and building a social identity, are outlined.

After that, I found out about the blog that highlights the impact of workplace harassment on victim’s mental health, which is “The Impacts of Workplace Harassment on Mental Health”. This blog delves into the profound consequences of workplace harassment on mental health. It outlines the immediate and long-term effects, including diminished job performance, anxiety disorders, sleeping problems, and the development of eating disorders. The role of employers in creating a safe environment and supporting mental health is emphasized. The article concludes by highlighting the need for societal engagement to align with workplace norms and expectations.

Lastly, the type of workplace harassment that I found significantly impactful is sexual harassment. I discussed it with 2 articles. The first one is “Industries with the Worst Sexual Harassment”. This blog sheds light on the prevalence of sexual harassment across various industries. To prove the finding, it also includes the report from the Australian Human Rights Commission, with sectors like software design, IT, media, acting, and cultural institutions showing high rates of harassment.

And the last one is” The Long-Lasting Effects of Workplace Sexual Harassment”. This blog categorizes the impacts of sexual harassment into short, medium, and long-term consequences. It discusses immediate challenges like unemployment and lost wages, medium-term disruptions to careers and financial stability, and long-term effects on savings and retirement. Personal stories emphasize the enduring nature of these consequences and the necessity of structural changes in workplaces to prevent harassment.

To conclude, after going through these sources, I have had a better understanding of different types of harassment at work, its consequences, and its effects. I found it interesting as it broadens my horizons with a lot of practical ways to deal with this problem.
